“abcdespañol” is a simple and highly effective game-playing system that teaches reading & writing to first language Spanish speakers. It can also be used to teach basic words to English speakers or speakers of other languages interested in learning some Spanish.
The game abcdespañol consists of a collection of plastic chips, problem sheets and workbooks. Learners play abcdespañol with each other, although individual usage has proven highly effective as well. The classroom teacher or other instructor (community leader, peer, grandparent, parent, etc.) plays the role of facilitator to motivate learning and orient knowledge development.
abcdespañol can and has been used with populations of adults and children both in and out of the school system. abcdespañol does not require a classroom or rigid time periods. It presents activities that draw upon group interaction and cooperation to motivate students and stimulate interest in continued learning. Using abcdespañol, first language Spanish speakers have learned to read and write (Spanish) in 90 to 120 hours of play. This constitutes six months if the learner plays one hour per day each weekday. It has also been used to teach basic Spanish to English speakers.
abcdespañol as a game is engaging and effective. The game demands that learners use memory, inference, analysis and synthesis while engaging their minds in a natural and fun way.
More than 1 million children and adults have learned how to read using this system, and there are more than 20 thousand educators around the world trained in the system.
